SnowPredictor.ca alternatives

Updated · By The BusCancellations.ca team

SnowPredictor.ca is the biggest Canadian snow day predictor, and a good one. People look for an alternative for three reasons: they want the official bus decision next to the prediction, they want to see exactly how the number is made, or they want a second opinion the night before a storm. Here is what else is out there.

Short answer

If you want a prediction and the live official bus status on one page, use BusCancellations.ca. If you only want a second prediction, SnowDayCA is the simplest. Whatever you use the night before, the morning answer is always on your consortium’s own site.

The alternatives

  1. 01BusCancellations.ca

A snow day predictor for 63 places built on the Environment Canada forecast and warnings, on the same site as the live bus status of 26 regions. The model is published; it has no accuracy record yet.

  2. 02SnowDayCA

A free predictor that takes any city or postal code and scores four factors (snowfall, extreme cold, wind, chance of snow) with the same thresholds everywhere. No live bus status.

  3. 03Your consortium’s official bus site and alerts

Not a prediction, but the decision itself, posted early in the morning before the first buses leave (Simcoe County posts between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m.). Some, like Simcoe County and Southwestern Ontario STS, offer email or app alerts for your child’s route.

  4. 04Environment Canada warnings and the WeatherCAN app

The official warnings every predictor leans on, with free push notifications for severe weather. No snow day chance.

Why people switch

  • The morning answer. SnowPredictor.ca ends where the official call begins. On BusCancellations.ca the region page shows the live status from the official site, the delayed and cancelled routes, and the predictor for that area together.
  • Bus cancellations, not only closures. In most of Ontario a bad morning cancels the buses and schools stay open. SnowPredictor.ca’s How it works page says its algorithm is trained on full school closures, not transportation-only decisions. Our chance is for either one.
  • A number you can check. SnowPredictor.ca doesn’t publish its weights. Ours are on the about page: for example, about 10 cm of overnight snow gives an even chance in rural Ontario and about 28 cm in Toronto.

Where SnowPredictor.ca is better

  • It covers more places (76 city pages, territories included) and searches by postal code. We cover 63 places from a list.
  • It publishes accuracy figures from a back-test against five years of closure records. We started logging in October 2026 and have no accuracy record yet; our profile numbers are starting values, not fitted ones.

Who should stick with SnowPredictor.ca

  • Families outside the places we cover, or anyone who wants to type a postal code.
  • Anyone in a board that closes schools outright rather than cancelling buses, where a closure-trained model is the right fit.
  • Anyone who wants a predictor with a published track record today.
