SnowDayCA alternatives
Updated · By The BusCancellations.ca team
SnowDayCA is a clean, free snow day calculator run independently from Ontario. Its formula is simple on purpose: four factors and the same thresholds for every place. If you want a predictor that treats a rural Simcoe route differently from a Toronto board, counts freezing rain, or shows the official bus decision on the same screen, these are the alternatives.
Short answer
For a predictor tuned by kind of place, with Environment Canada warnings and the live bus status beside it, use BusCancellations.ca. For the most places and a published accuracy record, SnowPredictor.ca.
The alternatives
Five factors (overnight snow, freezing rain, blowing snow, extreme cold, Environment Canada warnings), tuned for 12 kinds of place, for 63 places, with live bus status from 26 regions.
The biggest Canadian predictor: 76 city pages, postal code search, calibrated on five years of board closure records, with published accuracy figures. No live bus status.
03Your consortium’s official bus site and alerts
The decision itself, posted early in the morning before the first buses leave, with email or app alerts in some regions (Simcoe County, Southwestern Ontario STS).
04Environment Canada warnings and the WeatherCAN app
Official warnings with free push notifications. No snow day chance.

Why people look past SnowDayCA
- One threshold for everyone. SnowDayCA says every location uses the same fixed thresholds. Boards don’t: a rural route on hills stops with far less snow than a city board that busses few students. Our model starts from a different number for each kind of place.
- Ice. SnowDayCA’s own FAQ says a few centimetres of freezing rain can stop buses faster than a much bigger snowfall, but freezing rain isn’t one of its four scored factors. In our model freezing rain during the morning run is a factor of its own.
- The official answer. SnowDayCA tells you to confirm with your board. We show the board’s transportation site status on the same page, checked every 3 minutes on school mornings.
Where SnowDayCA is better
- It works for any city or postal code in Canada. We cover 63 places from a list.
- It is simpler: one score, one formula on one page.
Who should stick with SnowDayCA
- Anyone outside the places we cover who wants to type a postal code.
- Anyone who wants the plainest possible score and doesn’t need the bus status beside it.
