Rural routes are the first to go: hills, unploughed side roads, blowing snow across open fields and long runs in the dark. A city kid’s board can run through a storm that cancels yours. These are the tools worth using, in the order we’d set them up.

**Short answer:** Set up your consortium’s route alerts first. Then use BusCancellations.ca the night before (its rural profiles start lower than its city ones) and in the morning for the status at a glance.

## Ranked for rural families

1. [Your consortium’s official alerts](https://buscancellations.ca): The decision itself, pushed to you. Simcoe County sends email alerts for delays of 15 minutes or more; Southwestern Ontario STS has the free BP Bus Delays app and email alerts. Your region page links to your consortium.
2. [BusCancellations.ca](https://buscancellations.ca/snow-day-predictor): The night-before chance with rural and snowbelt profiles, plus the morning status of 26 regions on one page, including zone-by-zone weather cancellations where the consortium posts them.
3. [Environment Canada warnings and WeatherCAN](https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/weather-general-tools-resources/weathercan.html): Snow squall, blowing snow and freezing rain warnings with free push notifications: the early sign that rural routes are at risk.
4. [SnowPredictor.ca](https://snowpredictor.ca/): A second opinion calibrated by region type (urban, suburban, rural), with 76 city pages. It predicts full school closures rather than bus cancellations.

## How our model treats rural routes

| Kind of place | Snow for an even chance | Freezing rain weight | Blowing snow weight |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Rural and small-town Ontario | 10 cm | 85% | 60% |
| Ontario snowbelt (lake-effect) | 12 cm | 85% | 90% |
| Southern Ontario cities and suburbs | 16 cm | 65% | 40% |
| City of Toronto and Peel | 28 cm | 45% | 20% |

Our starting calibration from src/data/profiles.ts, also on the about page. These are our model’s numbers, not any board’s policy, and they get re-fit from real decisions.

## Why rural families need a different read

In our model, about 10 cm of overnight snow gives an even chance of cancelled buses in rural Ontario, against 28 cm in Toronto. Freezing rain counts more (85% vs 45%) and so does blowing snow (60% vs 20%). A predictor that uses one threshold for everyone will read a rural morning as safer than it is.

## Zones matter

Some consortia cancel by zone, not by board. Simcoe County posts weather cancellations for its North, West, Central and South zones, and we show each zone on [the Simcoe County page](https://buscancellations.ca/simcoe-county). Know your zone or your bus run number before the first storm.

## When another tool is the better pick

- For your child’s exact run, the consortium’s alerts beat any website, ours included.
- Outside the places we cover, SnowPredictor.ca or SnowDayCA can give a chance by postal code.
