SnowPredictor.ca is the biggest Canadian snow day predictor, and a good one. People look for an alternative for three reasons: they want the **official** bus decision next to the prediction, they want to see exactly how the number is made, or they want a second opinion the night before a storm. Here is what else is out there.

**Short answer:** If you want a prediction **and** the live official bus status on one page, use BusCancellations.ca. If you only want a second prediction, SnowDayCA is the simplest. Whatever you use the night before, the morning answer is always on your consortium’s own site.

## The alternatives

1. [BusCancellations.ca](https://buscancellations.ca/snow-day-predictor): A snow day predictor for 63 places built on the Environment Canada forecast and warnings, on the same site as the live bus status of 26 regions. The model is published; it has no accuracy record yet.
2. [SnowDayCA](https://snowdayca.com/): A free predictor that takes any city or postal code and scores four factors (snowfall, extreme cold, wind, chance of snow) with the same thresholds everywhere. No live bus status.
3. [Your consortium’s official bus site and alerts](https://buscancellations.ca): Not a prediction, but the decision itself, posted early in the morning before the first buses leave (Simcoe County posts between 6:00 and 6:30 a.m.). Some, like Simcoe County and Southwestern Ontario STS, offer email or app alerts for your child’s route.
4. [Environment Canada warnings and the WeatherCAN app](https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/weather-general-tools-resources/weathercan.html): The official warnings every predictor leans on, with free push notifications for severe weather. No snow day chance.

## SnowPredictor.ca and the alternatives, side by side

| Feature | SnowPredictor.ca | BusCancellations.ca | SnowDayCA |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Live official bus status | No; it sends you to your board’s site or local radio | Yes: 26 regions read from their official transportation sites, every 3 minutes from 4 to 11 a.m. on school days, with the time of our last check | No; it tells you to confirm with your board |
| Weather data | Environment Canada’s GDPS model via the Open-Meteo API, with NOAA’s GFS as a check; refreshed hourly | The Environment Canada city forecast, hourly forecast and warnings, read from api.weather.gc.ca; predictions refreshed every 15 minutes | Live Open-Meteo weather data |
| What it predicts | Full school closures; its own page says transportation-only cancellations are not what it was trained on | The chance that buses are cancelled **or** schools close on the next school morning | A 0–100 score for a snow day or bus cancellation |
| Where | 76 city pages across all provinces and territories, plus city or postal code search | 63 places in 10 provinces, picked from a list (no postal code search) | Any city or postal code |
| Environment Canada warnings | Not mentioned in its method pages | Yes: snowfall, winter storm, freezing rain, snow squall, blizzard and extreme cold warnings each add a chance | Not one of its four scored factors |
| How the number is made | A points score, then a logistic regression on five years of board closure records; weights not published | Published: five factors combined as independent risks, with the numbers for each of 12 kinds of place on [our about page](https://buscancellations.ca/about) | Four factors with the same fixed thresholds everywhere; published on its home page |
| Accuracy record | Publishes 68–90% by type of storm, from its own back-test | None yet. We log every prediction and every official decision since October 2026 and will re-fit the model from that history | No figures published |
| Cost | Free, no account | Free, no account; paid for by ads | Free, no sign-up |

Rival facts are from each site’s own pages, checked 2026-10-29. The city count is the city pages linked from SnowPredictor.ca’s menu that day.

## Why people switch

- **The morning answer.** SnowPredictor.ca ends where the official call begins. On BusCancellations.ca the region page shows the live status from the official site, the delayed and cancelled routes, and the predictor for that area together.
- **Bus cancellations, not only closures.** In most of Ontario a bad morning cancels the buses and schools stay open. SnowPredictor.ca’s How it works page says its algorithm is trained on full school closures, not transportation-only decisions. Our chance is for either one.
- **A number you can check.** SnowPredictor.ca doesn’t publish its weights. Ours are on [the about page](https://buscancellations.ca/about): for example, about 10 cm of overnight snow gives an even chance in rural Ontario and about 28 cm in Toronto.

## Where SnowPredictor.ca is better

- It covers more places (76 city pages, territories included) and searches by postal code. We cover 63 places from a list.
- It publishes accuracy figures from a back-test against five years of closure records. We started logging in October 2026 and have no accuracy record yet; our profile numbers are starting values, not fitted ones.

## Who should stick with SnowPredictor.ca

- Families outside the places we cover, or anyone who wants to type a postal code.
- Anyone in a board that closes schools outright rather than cancelling buses, where a closure-trained model is the right fit.
- Anyone who wants a predictor with a published track record today.
